Microsoft Pocket Streets

Microsoft Pocket Streets 2005 can transform a Microsoft Windows Mobile operating software based device into a personal map guide for manual navigation. Basic roadmaps can be overlaid with points of interest location references. Users have control over what information and what level of detail will be shown on your maps. Unlike a location based service, no information beyond a name is available for points of interest.

Included with Pocket Streets 2005 are:

  • Pocket Streets 2005 for Windows Mobile powered Pocket PCs
  • Pocket Streets 2005 for Windows Mobile powered Smartphones
  • Pocket Streets 2005 Getting Started guide
  • Over 300 maps of North America and more than 275 maps of Western Europe
  • Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7

Some 500 maps for Pocket Streets are available for download from Microsoft’s Web site. Map downloads for Western Europe and Canada are available in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. Map files for Windows Mobile powered Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile powered Smartphones are the same (.mps files).

Pocket Streets 2005 includes the following functionalities:

  • zooming and panning views of maps
  • map searches by street number and address or by point of interest name
  • custom pushpins for custom address entries
  • control over level of detail to be shown on maps displayed
  • download maps from the Internet

One functionality not provided by Pocket Streets 2005 is automated routing determination and driving directions.

Pocket Streets ties in with a smart device’s calendar and contacts list. A map location, for example, can be accessed from contact details.

With access to GPS receiver data, if installed, Pocket Streets will dynamically display its current location on a map. While Pocket Streets doesn’t provide directions it is one better than a road atlas in that it can show you where you are on the map and where you’re going leaving connecting the dots to you.
