TomTom ONE is TomTom’s entry level mobile GPS unit which has a powerful range of features delivered for a budget satisfying price. It has received numerous awards including best GPS unit in the 2006 Pocket-Lint Awards.

Things to like about TomTom ONE include; a simple to use interface with easy to follow 3D maps, touchscreen capability, quick startup to satellite signal lock of 20 seconds or so, nice clear voice instructions, a simple yet effective mounting system, traffic updates available via Bluetooth, quick recalculation of your route if you stray off course, facility for multiple waypoints and use of the same Version 5 navigation engine as other current TomTom devices.

Software

It seems to be a common opinion that the TomTom Navigator 5 software is simple and intuitive to use. The software is comprehensive for all but the more advanced users and is certainly effective for a car based GPS system. Some features more advanced users might miss are coordinate entry (latitude + longitude), route logging and other fairly exacting analysis functions.

GPS Chipset

The TomTom ONE has installed the new SiRFStarIII Chipset. This receiver is far more sensitive than previous chipsets and will work in situations where earlier units would struggle and require an external antenna be fitted. The SiRFStarIII is quicker to acquire a satellite signal and maintains a more tenacious lock.

Bluetooth

The unit is equipped with Bluetooth for connection to a Bluetooth compatible mobile phone for accessing TomTom’s PLUS Services such as Traffic, Weather and downloadable maps. Additional costs/subscriptions apply for the additional services.

Battery and Charger

The units smallish battery pack will provide about 2 hours of power until depletion. This isn’t a problem if running the unit from a car charger lead but, may be if running from battery alone is preferred.

It should be noted that the TomTom ONE is not supplied with a mains power charger. Most probably to keep the price down, TomTom have included a 12v car charger lead only.

Expansion - Accessories

The TomTom ONE has a SD Card Slot for memory expansion and a mini-USB connection socket. There is also a headphone socket (if background noise is too much) and an external antenna socket. With the more sensitive SiRF11 chipset it is doubtful the external antenna socket will be required.

General

The TomTom ONE has a slim form factor due mostly perhaps to the compact lithium-iron batteries. The unit has a good audio volume which is important when there is background traffic noise. TomTom ONE provides full support for the .ov2 format for Points of Interest (POI).
