Mio C520 Car GPS Navigation Device Review

Mio Technology Limited is a Belgian company with operations around the world. It holds the number thee position for mobile GPS services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mio leveraged off their PDA experience to launch the world’s first GPS integrated PDA back in 2003.

Mio C520 Car GPS Navigation Device

Mio’s new C520 follows what seems a steadily going trend or a widescreen display measuring some 4.3 inches in this case. The wow factor with widescreen seems to be that you can have the navigation map display up at the same as option selections to the side, something like Windows Vista with its widgets down the side.

The Mio C520 has a wide ranging set of Tele Atlas maps from 22 countries and is certainly multi-lingual with the ability to provide navigation instructions in 16 languages. There is a data base of Points of Interest including petrol stations, hospitals, ATM and restaurants to name a few.

You can safely make phone calls from behind the wheel with the bluetooth enabled C520. It switches automatically from navigation to phone mode when you get a call.

The Mio’s GPS work is handled by a SiRFstar III GPS receiver chip which has the best performance specifications at the moment as revealed in GPSTek’s recent GPS chipset performance survey.

The Mio C520 will give audio and visual warnings for known loacation of fixed safety cameras as well as linkely locations of mobile safety cameras - where allowed by law. Each C520 comes with twelve months free satety camera database updates after product registration.

  2. I have just purchased the exceptionally well featured MIO C520 unit ( all prices here are converted to AUD) for $418 at Harvey Norman which is great value compared to the near top of range Tom Tom GO720 & Garmin 660 which can be purchased for approximately $600 & $700 respectively. It also carries a bonus 12 months warranty for a total of 24 months and almost $200 to $300 savings.

There is a sting in the tail however. Mio sells the North American map for a whopping $299 and Europe for $369. This brings the total cost to $1086. The Tom Tom maps can be downloaded for a currently discounted to Australia & New Zealand customers (ends January 31 2008) for an amaxing $79.95 & $99.95 each. This brings the total cost to only $780 with the $600 unit price. The Garmin 660 totals a massive $1218 with the $700 base unit price.

In effect the near top of range Tom Tom GO 720 smashes the competition by $308 against Mio and $438 against the Garmin. Enough to potentially by another basic Tom Tom.

I know that this comparison is meaningless if you are not going to use the unit in the USA and Europe and the MIO is a fantastic unit at the base price.
