Garmin Mobile 20 - A GPS and BlueTooth Mount for Smartphones and BlackBerrys - Review

The Garmin Mobile 20 is a mobile phone mount with a GPS receiver and Bluetooth built-in to add GPS navigation and hands free calling to your on Nokia, Windows Mobile or Treo 650 Smartphone or BlackBerry (note that there is a different version for BlackBerrys). With Internet access equipped mobile phones services such as weather, traffic conditions and safety camera databases can be accessed through Garmin Online. The unit can be mounted to the cars windshield with an included suction-cup.

Garmin Mobile 20 GPS Navigation System

The plug-and-play Garmin Mobile 20 comes pre-loaded card with maps and navigation software. The included Garmin Mobile XT or nRoute DVD-ROM contains software and full map coverage for North America or Europe. Owners with a laptop can use the nRoute navigation software application which is optimized for the laptop display. Garmin’s Mobile XT navigation software application is compatible with smartphones or PDAs.

Both navigation applications allow users to look up millions of points of interest (POI) such as restaurants, hotels, ATMs, and gas stations. Whether navigating by selecting a POI or entering an address, the fastest or shortest route will be calculated and both voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions moving map visual directions will be provided. The route is automatically recalculated if you stray. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ(TM). The North American versions include maps of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The Garmin Mobile 20 is not intended for portable use having no battery and relying on an external 24V charger for power supply. If you need a GSP receiver mount with an in-built battery you need to look at the Garmin Mobile 10.

Garmin Mobile 20 has the PeerPoints feature allowing you to text your position to any other phone and navigate to the location of Garmin Mobile XT users in your group. When a location text message arrives the location shows up on your map display. It’s a very handy tool for keeping track of family and friends.
