Sony NV-U92T, NV-U82, NV-U52 and NV-U72T Car Navigation Devices Review

Sony’s NV-U92T was an in-car navigation award winner at the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) EISA Awards 2007-2008. EISA is the largest editorial multimedia organization in Europe, with a membership of nearly 50 Audio, Mobile Electronics, Video and Photo magazines drawn from 19 European countries.

Sony NV-U92T Car GPS Navigation System

Sony’s NV-U92T, NV-U82, NV-U52 and NV-U72T all have very similar specifications. The specification given below is for the award winning NV-U92T however, a detailed table of differences between the models is also provided.

Briefly the main specification differences are:

  • NV-U52 and NV-U72t have 3.5 inch displays at a 4:3 aspect ratio, 320×240 resolution as opposed to the NV-U82 and NV-U92T which have 4.8 inch widescreen displays (16:9 aspect ratio) with a higher 480×272 pixel resolution.
  • Battery life for the NV-U52 and NV-U72t are notably higher at 4 hours as opposed to 2.5 hours.
  • Both the NV-U82 and NV-U92T have USB ports for data transfer.
  • The NV-U72T and NV-U92T have a larger built-in flash memory of 2 Gb as opposed to 512Mb for the NV-U52 and NV-U82.
  • The NV-U72T and NV-U92T have the advantage of TMC services for calculation of the best route based on real time traffic information.

With the NV-U92T and its siblings Sony has stuck to providing only navigation system functionalities. If you would like other multimedia features like MP3 or video playback, image viewing or games – then this range of car navigation devices are not for you as none of these types of features are available. A fairly significant omission is Bluetooth for hands free mobile phone operation.

In keeping with their focus on navigation excellence Sony have included a dead reckoning capability if the very sensitive SiRF Star III GPS chip looses its GPS satellite fix(s). Sony call their dead reckoning capability Position Plus which incorporates an acceleration sensor and a pressure sensor to maintain guidance during GPS signal loss.

All navigation commands for Sony’s car GPS navigators are entered using the touchscreen. An additional, unique navigation, safety feature with is Gesture Command. Frequently used commands can be activated by drawing a pre-recorded symbol on the touch screen. This sort of added safety feature seems odd in the absence of hands free mobile phone operation using Bluetooth.

Potential purchasers should note that an AC charger is an optional accessory.
