Navman S90i S Series Car GPS Navigator Review

The Navman S90i is the premier model of the Navman S series of car GPS navigators. It has recently been nominated for the 4th Pocket-lint Gadget Awards 2007.

Navman S90i S Series Car GPS Navigator

The Navman S90i has an attractive, smart look with a silver casing finish with generously curved edges, slim form factor (20mm) and a widescreen LCD touchscreen set in a black border. Navman claim that the S90i is 25% lighter (198g) than any other sat nav in its class.

In what may become a common technology convergence, the S90i comes with a 2 Megapixel camera with lens cover built into its rear face. The camera integrates nicely with Navman’s new navigate by images feature. The 4.3 inch touch screen widescreen display has a useful 480 x 272 pixels resolution for navigating the attractive redesigned interface and menu system. Memory capacity is excellent with 2GB internal Flash memory, 96 MB SDRAM and SD/MMC card slot for memory expansion. The rechargeable integrated Li-ION battery-up can deliver up to a very impressive 5 hrs life.

All Navman S series car GPS navigators have a SiRF Star III chipset receiver which has the advantages of: faster fix times (acquiring its location), higher signal locking and tracking sensitivity and low power requirements

A sensible feature which is common with other mobile technologies which has now made it to GPS devices is a security password lockout. With health and safety in mind Navman have included an SOS button which displays local emergency services and will integrate with a Bluetooth connected phone to call the nearest one if required.

The Navman S90i has text-to-speech (TTS) capability which enables it to announce street names when giving directions. Its is also a handy adjunct to the S90i’s SMS display capability reading out the SMS message and allowing you to keep your eyes focused on the road ahead. Another feature speech capability feature is the talking keypad for easier inputting of text, addresses and postcodes. For improved night time viewing there is automatic display dimming.

Navigation and Mapping

The S90i has the capability to navigate you around traffic congestion using the integrated Real-time Traffic information service which comes with a free product lifetime subscription. The FM based radio signal, RDS-TMC (Radio Data System – Traffic Message Channel) alerts you to known problems such as accidents, congestion and roadworks. The Navman S Series provides you with Route Traffic Overview to see in advance what’s ahead and select a re-routing option if considered necessary.

The Navman S series of GPS car navigators utilizes constantly updated Tele Atlas mapping information. Navman’s iUpData service allows motorists to enter details of any inaccuracies encountered into the iUpData database providing more accurate, social network edited mapping information.

Mapping information also includes data on safety camera locations through a free 12 month safety camera data trial. The S Series GPS navigators will intelligently warn of cameras based on direction of travel and your speed relative to the local limit at that location. Once again, the iUpData database allows motorists to enter details of any inaccurate or new safety camera locations.

Navman S90i’s NavPix Navigation Feature

Navman’s NavPix feature allows users to navigate using NavPix photos which are images which have been geotagged with their grographic location. It turns photos into convenient and easier to recognize visual points of interest (POI) for navigation. Navman provide a NavPix download library of thousands of hotels, restaurants and landmarks throughout Europe which can be used to plan a trip. With the S90i the integrated camera can be used to take geotagged photos of favorite locations to be used as visual POI for personal navigation or sharing with friends using say a Bluetooth connected mobile.
