Navman S70 and S50 S Series Car GPS Navigator Review

Navman have obviously put in some heavy design work developing their new S Series car GPS navigators having made 500 individual improvements. The S50 and S70 both have an attractive, smart look with a silver casing finish with generously curved edges, slim form factor (20mm) and a widescreen LCD touchscreen set in a thick black border.

Navman S Series Car GPS Navigator

Specifications for the Navman S70 and S50 are identical except for the maps pre-loaded. The S50 is sold with only regional maps for the location/country sold in while the S70 has European maps covering 21 countries in Western and Central Europe, including major roads leading into Eastern Europe.

All Navman S series car GPS navigators have a SiRF Star III chipset receiver which has the advantages of: faster fix times (acquiring its location), higher signal locking and tracking sensitivity and low power requirements

The Navman S70 and S50 both have a 4.3 inch touch screen widescreen display with a 480 x 272 pixels resolution for navigating the attractive redesigned interface and menu system of the S series. There is ample memory capacity with 2GB internal Flash memory, 64 MB SDRAM and an SD/MMC card slot for memory expansion. Up to 5 hours of power are available from the rechargeable, integrated Li-ION battery.

The Navman S series have an interesting talking keypad feature for easier inputting of text, addresses and postcodes. Automatic display dimming provides improved night time display viewing.

A sensible feature, common to other mobile devices is the security password lockout. For personal security, Navman have included an SOS button which displays local emergency services and can also call the nearest one, if required, utilizing a Bluetooth connected mobile phone.

Navigation and Mapping

The S70 and S50 models have integrated Real-time Traffic information service for navigating around traffic congestion. The S series navigators come with a free lifetime subscription. Traffic information is provided by the RDS-TMC (Radio Data System – Traffic Message Channel), an FM based radio signal, which provides alerts on known problems such as accidents, congestion and road works. The Navman S Series provides you with Route Traffic Overview to see in advance what’s ahead and select a re-routing option if considered necessary.

The Navman S series GPS navigators utilize constantly updated Tele Atlas mapping information. Feedback on mapping inaccuracies can be forwarded using Navman’s iUpData service.

Safety camera locations are available through the S series navigators and a free 12 month safety camera data trial is included. The S Series GPS navigators will intelligently warn of cameras based on direction of travel and your speed relative to the local limit at that location. The iUpData database allows motorists to enter details of any new or inaccurate safety camera locations.
