Nokia 810 Internet Tablet - GPS Enabled - Review

The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet was introduced by Nokia at the recent Web 2.0 2007 Summit and already it has been named as one of Wired’s Top Ten Gadgets of the Year. The unit embraces the concept of a Internet connected GPS navigation device which will allow instant access to current maps, user-updating of maps, access to current points of interest (POI) databases and online location based services. Connected personal navigation devices (PND) such as the N810 are going to provide the platform for far more accurate demographic targeting of POI in the future.

Nokia 810 GPS Enabled Internet Tablet

The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet is a powerful ultra mobile communication (VOIP) and software utilities platform driven by a Texas Instruments OMAP 2420 processor running at the same fast 400MHz as its Samsung rival. For an ultra portable device, the Nokia N810 has an attractively large and useful 4.13 inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) color touch screen display. Other hardware features include a SiRF Star III GPS receiver, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, twin speakers, microphone and VGA camera.

The Nokia N810 allows one the flexibility to check and send emails while on the move. The included Web browser is capable of delivering the interactivity typical of Web 2.0 web pages. Location awareness makes it possible to utilize location based services and search.

Communicating With the Nokia N810, VOIP and BlueTooth.

While the Nokia N810 is not a phone it provides convenient methods to communicate using either the Internet (VOIP) through a Wi-Fi hotspot (802.11b/g) or a Bluetooth 2.0 connection through a cell phone.

Skype is likely to be the VOIP/communication application of choice on the Nokia N810 as it’s free software and packs loads of features including:

  • free calls to other Skype users,
  • low rate local, long distance and international calls to phones and cell phones,
  • free video calls,
  • instant messaging,
  • conference calling and
  • group chat.

Multimedia Player

Nokia have provided the 810 Internet Tablet with a multimedia player for listening to music while on the move. As well as accessibility to streamed content adding a memory card will provide storage for a huge number of music tracks for playback.

Operating System

The Nokia N810 is powered by maemo Linux based OS2008 which is popular because it is being regularly updated and is highly customizable. Software available includes a Mozilla based browser capable of handling Web 2.0 web sites, Video Gizmo, Skype and Rhapsody. There is Bluetooth headset support. Wi-Fi (Network/Internet) connectivity can be handled by Boingo Wireless, Earthlink and The Cloud. Nokia have an OS2008 user website. There is also maemo.org, an open source community sponsored by Nokia.

Navigation

The Nokia N810’s integrated GPS receiver provides location awareness for use with location based services available through an Internet connection as well as being able to pinpoint your location on pre-loaded maps (vary with different regions).

The Nokia N810 can also serve as a helpful travel companion covering regions including North America, Western Europe, Middle East, South Africa, Russia, Australia and Singapore. Pre-installed voice-guided navigation in the form of Wayfinder Navigator is available for turn-by-turn directions (15 languages) for exploring on foot, bicycle or car. It comes with a points of interest (POI) database for searching for items such as ATM’s, banks, police stations, doctors, pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, theatres, bars, shops, night life and petrol stations. In some areas Wayfinder Navigator will provide additional on-line services such as real time traffic information and safety camera databases. Nokia N810 Internet tablet users can try Wayfinder Navigator for 7 days free of charge then continue by purchasing the service.
