January 23, 2008Magellan Triton 300 and Magellan Triton 200 Outdoor Handheld GPS Navigators ReviewBoth the Magellan Triton 200 and 300 are outdoor handheld GPS units designed to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts including backpackers, hunters and fishermen. They are lightweight and a convenient pocket size. The Triton range is built to withstand accidental impacts and is IPX-7 rated for immersion at 1m depth for up to 30 minutes. For ease of use in the field, both the Magellan Triton 200 and 300 have 2.2 inch (5.9 cm) QVGA color touch screens. Other features include an electronic compass and an SD card slot for loading map updates and memory expansion. Both Tritons are compatible with downloadable National Geographic maps.
A SiRF Star III GPS receiver powers the GPS navigation capabilities of the Triton 300 and 200 units, as with the rest of the range. The SiRF chipset is renowned for its high sensitivity which is important for gaining your location in low GPS signal strength areas such as in canyons, ravines or heavily wooded areas. Position accuracy is (10 - 16 feet) (3 to 5 meters) for WAAS/EGNOS and < 7 meters (15 feet) for GPS only Conveniently, the Magellan Triton 200 and 300 come ready to use out of the box, pre-loaded with maps for the 48 mainland United States and Canada including features such as major highways, city centers, parks, lakes and more plus worldwide geographic boundaries. Additional maps can be uploaded to available memory or an SD card. For those who like a little entertainment while roughing it, the Triton has a digital music player. Headphones can be plugged in if necessary. Magellan have made VantagePoint available with all Triton handheld navigators. VantagePoint is a new, free map and content management application from Magellan with features enabling easy upgrades, information sharing, map downloads and uploading of stored treks, waypoints, POI and other stored media. National Geographic Maps AvailableMagellan’s Triton outdoor GPS range is capable of full onscreen usage and display of National Geographic’s maps. There are 28 National Geographic TOPO! outdoor recreation mapping software titles covering all 50 US states. Five layers of maps include National Geographic Atlas maps through to the most detailed U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps. Maps and waypoints can be downloaded from TOPO! including National Geographic’s new Weekend Explorer 3D, which includes 21 titles for major urban centres and surrounding recreational areas. In a philanthropic gesture, Magellan will be donating a portion of Triton sales proceeds till 31 December 2007 to the National Park Foundation for assistance in the conservation, preservation and enjoyment of America’s national treasures.
