Garmin GPS76, GPSMAP76, GPSMAP76S, GPSMAP76CS and GPSMAP76CSx Handheld Mapping GPS Review

Garmin’s handheld mapping GPS76 range includes the GPS76, GPSMAP76, GPSMAP76S, GPSMAP76CS and GPSMAP76CSx. They are nominated my Garmin as their mariner friendly mapping GPS devices which could be used for boating, hunting or fishing. The premium models, the GPSMAP76CS and GPSMAP76CSx can also provide you with turn-by-turn on road navigation to your destination. All units have a well rounded range of features for their intended duty including the essential ability of floating if dropped in the water. Naturally they are rugged being made from a high impact plastic alloy and are fully gasketed for a waterproof (submersible) IPX7 rating.

Garmin GPS MAP 76 Series

All GPS76 models have a compact form factor and light weight (7.7 oz or 218g with batteries) and will sit easily into a pocket. The long 16-18 hour battery life depending on model means that you don’t have to carry an excessive number of batteries in your other pockets.

All models have a decent size 2.7 inch (6.9cm) screen for reading maps and other data. The transreflective color TFT screens of the GPSMAP76CS and GPSMAP76CSx are the pick for ease in distinguishing on-screen details. Transreflective screens are specifically designed to be easy to view in even bright sunlight.

Essential for an outdoors GPS device, the GPS76 range has the capability for up to 50 reversible routes with up to 250 points each. Automatic track logging of up to 20 saved tracks is available to let you retrace your path in both directions. Up to 1000 Waypoints can be stored depending on the model.

Garmin GPS76 Series - GPS Receiver Accuracy

The GPSMAP 76Cx and 76CSx models come with a high sensitivity SiRFstarIII GPS receiver and a typical accuracy of <10m as opposed to <15m for the other models. All models are WAAS enabled which closes the accuracy gap and improves the position accuracy to 3-5m. As a result, the availability of WAAS support in areas the GPS unit is used will affect selection. The GPSMAP 76Cx and 76CSx have a much faster warm GPS satellite acquisition time of 1s compared to about 15 seconds with other models.
