Garmin Nuvi 2×5 Models | Nuvi 3.5 inch 205, 4.3 inch 205W | Nuvi 3.5 inch 255 and 4.3 inch 255W Auto GPS Navigators with Navigation by Photos Review


The Garmin 3.5 inch touch screen 205 and 255 and the 4.3 inch screen 205 W and 255W are what Garmin refer to as their 2×5 model auto GPS navigators. All have improved features over earlier models including improved mapping and routing features, faster satellite acquisition (HotFix), navigation by photos, FM traffic updates and dynamic content from MSN Direct. With these models Gamin has included higher end features in what is an entry level auto GPS series.


Garmin Nuvi 205W

Garmin Nuvi 2×5 Model Differences

Specifications for the Garmin Nuvi 255 and 255W and the Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W are identical apart from the W suffix models having the larger widescreen and accepting SD cards as opposed to miniSD cards.

Additional/differing features of the 255 models include

  • Text-to-speech (North America version only)
  • Choice of Qwerty or ABC keyboard and
  • Preloaded maps are regional (eg. Europe vs individual countries of Europe)

Microelectronics Cartesio GPS Receiver

The most significant technology change with the Garmin Nuvi 2×5 models is the switch to ST Microelectronics Cartesio automotive-grade application processor System-on-Chip (SoC) with embedded GPS for navigation. This approach improves functionality and reliability.

Garmin Connect Photos

A destination can be selected by choosing a POI, entering an address, a favourite, selecting home or a geotagged photo. It’s possible to set waypoints (Garmin refer to them as via points) and request a reroute while navigating your plotted route.

The Map View page has the following icons to touch;

  1. NEW Turn Indicator to view information about the next turn in your route and to repeat the instruction for your next turn.
  2. Text Bar to preview the upcoming turns in your route.
  3. Traffic Icon to open the Traffic Menu
  4. + and – for zoom
  5. Speed to view information about your trip, such as the odometer
  6. Menu to return to the menu page
  7. Arrival to display a map of your route.

Speed zones are also conveniently displayed next to your current speed at the bottom left of the screen.

Geotagged Photo Navigation

Garmin Connect Photos

Garmin Connect Photos is a free web service from Garmin that allows customers to search for photos by address/location from the extensive range of photos on the Panoramio website. Once downloaded and transferred to a compatible Garmin GPS navigation device they can be used to enter a destination for turn-by-turn directions as they have been geotagged with location information. Compatible Garmin GPS devices include the 205, 205W, 255, 255W, 760 (Asia only), 850, 860, 880 and 5000.

Other New Features of Garmin Nuvi 2×5 Models

Numerous high end performance and functionality features have been added to the new 2×5 nuvi models including;

  • HotFix – provides faster position fixes through maintaining a predictive model of satellite positions for up to three days
  • Faster 333 MHz processor for faster graphics and position updates.
  • Navigation using addresses imported directly from Google Maps or Mapquest
  • Map View includes 3D shaded terrain from Garmins new Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
  • Automatic Time Zone Transition
  • Enhanced MSN Traffic and Content (with optional GDB55 antenna and charger). Dynamic content from generation 2 of the MSN Direct network includes; traffic conditions, fuel prices, weather reports, enhanced movie listings, local events, news and stocks and send to GPS capability.
  • Large database of 6.5 million searchable points of interest (POI)
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes for useful portability (up to 4 hours/charge)
  • Custom Vehicle Icons provide scope you personalize your navigator
  • Where Am I? — instantly shows you all of the emergency services nearby
