TomTom ONE 125 Portable 3.5 inch GPS Navigator Review

The TomTom ONE 125 GPS navigator is identical to the TomTom ONE 130 other than having US maps (TeleAtlas) rather than North American maps which include Canada to allow an even more competitive price. The TomTom ONE 125 features the compact size for portability as well as the new EasyPort windshield mount. The LCD touchscreen is 3.5 inches diagonal so it’s not a widescreen. Like the TomTom ONE 130, the ONE 125 has simple “turn-right” or “turn left” navigation instructions rather than text-to-speech with street names being announced as available with the TomTom ONE 130S. TomTom’s QuickGPSfix for speeding up the obtaining of a position fix is noteworthy feature.

The new EasyPort mount can be folded flat on the TomTom ONE 125 for easy transport or shifting it between cars, saving the need to purchase a second GPS mount. Attaching the EasyPort mount is a simple sequence of pushing it against the windscreen and twisting the lock nut as shown in the video below.

Navigating with the TomTom ONE 125 Portable GPS Navigator

There are a wide range of options for entering your destination into the 125 including;

  • Home which takes you to your designated home address,
  • Map point selection by browsing map and touching screen,
  • Favorites list of locations which you have saved much like favourite pages in a Web browser,
  • Recent Destinations selection which is similar to selecting recently visited web pages in a Web browser except they are physical locations,
  • Address Entry through use of an on-screen keypad to enter your address,
  • Points of Interest (POI) selection from various categories or your own POI entries and
  • Last Position which can be very handy if you are prone to forgetting where you parked your car.

TomTom’s Latest Map Guarantee

The TomTom ONE 125 is covered by TomTom’s Latest Map Guarantee allowing a free map update download if a new map is released within 30 days of purchase.

Tom Tom’s Map Share Technology

Map Share gives users the ability to personalize their maps as well as bringing the power of community input to correct and improve available maps. Using Map Share users can; 1) modify street names and direction 2) add, remove or rename POIs and 3) (un)block streets on their own device. Users can share their map improvements and benefit from all other users’ improvements easily via TomTom’s HOME. TomTom’s user community of some 20 million provides plenty of leverage for ensuring maps are up to date.

Send Addresses Directly from Google Maps

A handy feature available with the TomTom ONE 125 is the ability to download a location you have found (GPS coordinates and address) with Google Maps.

TomTom HOME

TomTom HOME software is provided free to TomTom users for accessing a range of services and contacting the global community of TomTom users. It’s used to manage, update and personalize your TomTom as well as purchase and install maps, make back-ups and download free software updates.

Help Me! Emergency Menu

Using TomTom’s ‘Help Me!’ feature users have instant access to safety and emergency services information including phone numbers, hospital and the nearest car repairer directions.

Traffic Capable

The TomTom ONE 125 is an entry level GPS navigator and doesn’t come with a RDS-TMC traffic receiver. However, it is Traffic Capable if teamed with an optional RDS-TMC traffic receiver. An RDS-TMC traffic receiver accessory uses FM radio channels to keep you informed in real-time of traffic events allowing you to minimize delays. There are also real-time warnings of dangerous road conditions ahead (US, Australia and Europe).

A one year free subscription to the TMC traffic service comes with the purchase of an RDS-TMC receiver accessory. When you purchase new maps the Traffic service covering that new area automatically becomes available. The TomTom Traffic service is currently available for Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
