Garmin Forerunner 310XT GPS Enabled Fitness Device Review

Garmin’s Forerunner 310XT GPS enabled fitness device is exactly that and not a crossover sports watch like its popular sibling the Forerunner 405CX. It’s a full on, dedicated training aid with a larger display and waterproof enough to be submerged to 50m meaning that it can be used by swimmers and triathletes. You can purchase the Forerunner 310XT with or without a new (more comfortable than previous models) waterproof, soft-strap heart rate monitor. It should be noted that the heart rate monitoring will not work in water.

For operating the simple interface, buttons are positioned around the large, vivid display. In even the loudest training environments users won’t miss the audible and/or vibration alerts as the Forerunner 310XT warns them when they’ve reached a milestone in their workout.

As well as offering high sensitivity, the GPS receiver is equipped with HotFix for quick GPS satellite acquisition. The Forerunner 310XT can also be used by cyclists with the addition of an optional speed/cadence bike sensor. Connectivity through the ANT+ personal wireless technology makes the Forerunner 310XT able to sync with add ons such as heart rate monitors, foot pods and other compatible third-party sensors. It will also automatically download training logs to a user’s PC or Mac for later analysis. It will also work in the other direction with runners, joggers, cyclists and hikers able to send courses, goals and workouts to their Forerunner 310XT before they train.

Gamin provides tools at their online training site, Garmin Connect for athletes to log workouts, set goals, share performance feedback with coaches and team mates. Unlike the Garmin ForeRunner 405CX, there is no unit-to-unit information transfer with the 310XT.

Endurance athletes will appreciate the extended battery life of up to 20 hours.
