uPro Golf GPS by Callaway Golf Review

The uPro Golf GPS by Callaway Golf is the most sophisticated golf GPS we’ve seen so far. It is the first to bring in mapping features that might be found in the premium outdoor handheld GPS devices such as the DeLorme PN-40. In fact it even goes further with the capability to accept voice commands, a feature usually seen on only premium GPS navigators.

The uPro is a convenient handheld size, is light at 3.1 ounces and will fit easily into a pocket. It has 2.2-inch, high-resolution (320 x 240 pixels) trasflective color screen transflective. Being transflective it uses uses sunlight to boost screen brightness. Lithium Ion battery capacity at 10-12 hours is more than adequate for a days golf.

The uPro has a sensitive GPS receiver for picking up GPS signals in weak signal locations such as under thick cover. It also has a quick time to first fix so you can get your game under way without delay.

As mentioned, one of the unique features of the uPro Golf GPS is the mapping features which include aerial and satellite golf course photographs. These mapping features are used in the Pro Mode described below.

The uPro can be operated in two modes:

Basic Mode:

Green View (left image)

The uPro displays distances to the front, back and center of the green as well as distances to the front and back of all hazards. Hazards are listed in order of distance from the current position of the user. Mark Shot gives the distance of any shot.

Hazzard View (right image)

Gives clear graphics of the hazard for a quick understanding of its type and lay.

Pro Mode:

Video Flyover (left image)

Before beginning a new hole one can view a virtual video flyover of the hole to get an idea of the layout and assist in strategy formation. From the green’s center 100, 150, and 200 yard markers are shown.

AnyPoint (center image)

With the AnyPoint interface displayed users are able to measure to any point from anywhere on the hole. Like a laser rangefinder it’s a great tool for planning shots.

SmartView (right image)

It’s called SmartView because it generates custom views based on where your standing on the course. Distances shown are updated as you move.

Conveniently, the uPro does not require any additional software to be downloaded to your PC to connect with the uPro servers. Once online a user can select and purchase course maps from a list of all mapped golf courses in the U.S. To help in selection (particularly if you are out of town) the unit uses its GPS positioning technology to automatically determines which courses are nearby. Individual map purchase is a bit different from most other golf GPS devices which have an annual membership fee. The uPro will hold 50 golf courses in memory.

The uPro comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, wall adapter, USB cable, and a single free Pro mode download of any golf course. The device has a six-month warranty.

If you want the most advanced golf GPS for improving your game the uPro Golf GPS by Callaway Golf is worth serious consideration.
