SPOT Unveils Next Generation Satellite GPS Messenger

SPOT is a Satellite GPS Messenger which has proven its worth having initiated more than 250 rescues since its market introduction. The new incarnation continues to provide the possibly life saving satellite distress messaging but, gives peace of mind to relatives and friends through a new “check-in” function.

SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger

There are actually three ways to message your contacts with the next generation SPOT.

As mentioned there is an OK/Check-in button which lets nominated contacts know where you are and that you are safe. When pressed, the OK button triggers the SPOT unit to acquire your location using GPS satellites and route the information through the SPOT satellite network. Messages can be delivered either as SMS text message or as an email which includes a convenient Google Maps link to identify your position on a map.

The Track Progress function sends and saves your location so others can follow your progress when convenient.

Also handy is a Custom Message button which will send a pre-programmed message to nominated personal contacts. It could be used to deliver a message about a target being reached and all being well.

If you need help while on your adventure you have the option of using the Help button to notify either family/friends or the SPOT Assist services. If the worst happens and you need rescuing it’s nice to know that you can hit the SOS/9-1-1 button and have a GEOS International Emergency Response Center notified of your GPS location. In fact, the message repeats every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center contacts the appropriate emergency response organization based on your location and personal information.

There have been numerous other improvements to the SPOT GPS Satelite messenger including:

  • 30 percent smaller and lighter
  • Improved satellite antenna for greater GPS signal sensitivity for low signal strength environments such as under foliage or in canyons
  • GPS Acquisition light
  • Protective covers over S.O.S and Help button to prevent accidental message transmission
  • Illuminated buttons
  • Orange or silver color choice
  • Included case and neoprene fastening band

If you have friends/family who enjoy adventures beyond normal lines of communication, an investment in the SPOT GPS Satellite Messenger makes such common sense. There are too many reports of tragedies where such a device could have made a life saving difference.
