CoPilot Live 11 for Laptop is ALK Technologies GPS navigation software specifically designed for personal navigation using a (Windows) laptop (or suitably specified netbook). With the resolution available with a laptop display the colourful 2D and 3D map navigation interfaces look impressive. The extra grunt of a laptop processor speeds up routing calculations - especially for multiple destinations (you can have up to 50 intermediate stops or waypoints!).

The navigation software has all the features you would expect from a dedicated GPS navigation device except the Bluetooth hands-free cell phone calls. Noteably however, CoPilot Live 11 does support Live Traffic features with warnings and automatic rerouting around traffic situations. You don’t have to worry about looking down at the screen too often when driving as the software supports text-to-speech so that you get turn-by-turn navigation instructions with street names announced to provide confirmation you are on track without taking your eyes off the road.

Noteworthy is the wide range of routing options available including a RV 12′6″ and 13′ height clearance, scenic, propane and Toll road avoidance. The route preview mode is something that would be appreciated on a lot more dedicated GPS navigation devices.

To use CoPilot Live 11 you do need a laptop with a built-in/USB/Bluetooth GPS receiver. Setup of the GPS receiver is a dead simple automated process.
CoPilot Live 11 for North America costs $149 or $249 when packaged with a Philips USB GPS receiver. With USB GPS receivers available from $30 it’s worth sourcing the GPS receiver separately (see below).
