Garmin’s new Portable Friction Dash Mount is a well regarded product as attested to by a 4.5 out of 5 star average rating from hundreds of Amazon customer reviews. Garmin have a few mounts with slightly different names however, this review is of the Garmin Portable Friction Dash Mount (Garmin Part Number: 010-11280-00).

Some states (Minneapolis, California) have made window suction mounts illegal so a friction or adhesive dashboard mount is necessary. Most GPS navigator owners are not keen to use the permanent adhesive disk included with their GPS device due the permanency and sticky marks left after removal. A friction mount avoids these problems. Another common situation requiring a friction mount is a steeply raked windshield combined with a wide dashboard where the GPS needs to be placed closer for easier viewing and to be within arms reach for using the touch screen. Being able to remove the friction mount for security when a car is parked is another reason for a friction mount. The new friction mount actually helps in this situation as the support arm will fold down for easier storage.

The Garmin Friction Dash Mount has a pliable rubber pad with a tacky temporary adhesive base which will mould to the contour of the dash under it. Overall the the new mount is lighter, smaller, more flexible and more attractive than the bean bag type mount. The cradle for the GPS navigator snaps onto the ball end of the support arm and can be rotated to a suitable viewing position.
