November 21, 2010Galaxy Tab GPS Capabilities ReviewSamsung has recognized the high consumer demand for location based services (LBS) and included a GPS receiver in their hot new Samsung Galaxy Tab media tablet. With an additional navigation app download from a recognized navigation company or the pre-loaded Google Maps Navigation (Beta) app owners can use their media tablet as a turn-by-turn GPS satellite navigation device. Australian Galaxy Tab purchasers are fortunate enough to have a Navigon GPS app pre-loaded for turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance with both driving and pedestrian modes. The 7 inch screen size makes the Galaxy Tab more easily adaptable to this use than larger screen size tablets.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a Broadcom BCM4751 standalone GPS receiver which has A-GPS (assisted GPS) capability so when a 3G connection is available it will download GPS assistance data over the high-speed cellular network decreasing the time for GPS location determination. The Broadcom BCM4751 is a very small single chip GPS receiver with a massively parallel, hardware correlator architecture to speed signal searches and very low average power consumption to suit mobile devices. It includes software optimized for cellular integration and personal navigation performance and includes sophisticated algorithms to mitigate multi-path errors.
