HP’s TouchPad Tablet does not come with a GPS receiver. As it also not 3G mobile network enabled, location determination is based on WiFi location positioning obtained using WiFi access point position databases maintained by services from Verizon, Apple, Google, Navizon, and Skyhook. WiFi accuracy is more accurate than mobile network base station triangulation and more accurate than most people probably believe at 20 – 30 m in dense urban areas. Coverage is of course limited to urban areas with accuracy increasing with urban (WiFi access point) density.

While it won’t provide the accuracy for turn-by-turn navigation, WiFi location positioning is accurate enough for location based search and other location based services. For more details read the WiFi location positioning post at Media Tablet Tek and the HP TouchPad review.
