Snaptracs (Qualcomm) Tagg Pet Tracker

Snaptracs has announced the Tagg Pet Tracker – a pet tracking system based on GPS and wireless capabilities. Snaptracs is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcom Incorporated which is a major silicon chips supplier to smartphone, gps and other related product manufacturers.

The Tagg tracker attaches securely to a dog collar with a two-piece clip. Using the Tagg allows pet owners to retrieve their pet’s location via a mobile phone or other mobile device. Current browser compatibility covers; Windows IE 7 and 8, Mozilla Firefox 3.x and Macintosh Firefox 3.x, and Safari 5 The device operates on the basis of sending the owner an email and/or text message if their pet wander from a virtual geofenced area to which it should normally be confined. Each Tagg tracker requires pairing with a docking station to function with it being possible to use multiple Tagg trackers for a single base station.

Battery life is important for such a device which is an area of expertise for Qualcom which continuously manufactures devices for the limited energy budgets available with mobile devices. Battery life is expected to be around 30 days depending on usage. Water resistance to IP67 means a shower is not going to disable the device.

National coverage is provided by the Verizon Wireless network. It’s expected that the Tagg Master Kit including all hardware and one full year of network service will cost about $200 with availability from September.
